As a business owner and employer you want to make sure your workplace is
safe for everyone. The UK government wants to make sure also. They set up fire
regulations which must be followed. The Regulatory Reform Order or Fire Safety
Order puts the responsibility of fire safety on the responsible party. Who is
the responsible party? You are as the business owner and employer. Your
employees are also responsible.
What Do The Fire Regulations Say?
One of the main points of the fire regulations is to perform a fire risk
assessment. When you carry out a fire risk assessment you are helping to make your workplace a much safer place. Such
things as fire alarms, escape routes, and lighting are updated to protect your
employees. All employees must be made aware of the escape routes and other
procedures that are put into place at your business.
Current UK fire safety regulations require you to put the escape route on paper
and make it available to your employees. You must make sure you have the proper
equipment in place in case of a fire. Things like fire extinguishers and fire
doors must be available. Fire regulations make it your responsibility to
document all your findings from a fire risk assessment and to make the documents
available to the Fire Authorities.
You must train your employees in what they must do in case of a fire. Training
fire marshals may be what you choose to do. Employees must be knowledgeable in
how to use fire equipment.
Using Fire Consultants
If you own a large business or are a small business owner and are not sure how
to proceed with a fire assessment you may want to hire fire consultants to do
the assessment for you. Fire consultants will come in and do an assessment. They
will then document their findings and go about preparing the workplace to be
fire safe. Fire consultants can teach you how to do a fire risk assessment.
All businesses want to protect their employees from danger. Fire is a real
possibility for any business. The Fire Safety Order will make sure your
workplace is safe from fires. Make sure you follow the laws governing this
legislation. If you fail to follow the rules you can be taken to court and
prosecuted or be forced to pay a fine. The Fire Authorities are responsible for
carrying out prosecutions and fines. They will make sure your business is safe
and your employees are protected. Make sure you do an assessment on a regular
basis.
